"For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. " (Matthew 18:20)

The tradition of the Passion Plays of St. Georgen am Kreischberg (formerly St. Georgen ob Murau) dates back to the 1920s and 1930s. The origins of staging the sufferings of Christ and his resurrection as amateur theatre productions lay deep in the Middle Ages, when Easter Plays were very common within the Catholic communities. Between 1922 and 1936 Passion Plays were frequently held in St. Georgen. Due to the outbreak of WWII the plays came to a standstill.

They were rediscovered and revived in 1998 and have been performed four times since then. Over 200 amateur actors participated in each production. Countless members of the community were busy behind the scenes, working on music, costumes and stage design. Thanks to these efforts the Passion Plays of St. Georgen became an inherent part of the regional art scene.

The upcoming plays in 2022 are focus on the 100th anniversary of this tradition and provide a series of innovations. The play will take place in the open air in front of the church in St. Georgen. The libretto and the artistic concept have been reworked.

We are looking forward to welcoming you at the Passion Plays in St. Georgen am Kreischberg!
